Rugarama Health Centre was started in 1983 by the Diocese of Kigezi, Church of Uganda (Anglican). Its first Sister-in-Charge was Sister Jennie Tustian MBE, a Missionary Nurse with the Rwanda Mission, now Church Mission Society (Mid-Africa Region). At the start the Centre was located on Rugarama Hill. It developed a reputation for quality Christian healthcare, particularly in malaria treatment, care for malnourished children and premature babies. It grew to 46 in-patient beds. In 1991, land was purchased by the Church at the foot of Rugarama Hill. This land was ear-marked for future construction of a church hospital. Between 2000-2004, the Health Centre received grants from Lions Club International, Truro Church Virginia, USA, and many other churches and individuals. Local funds were also raised through a major fundraising drive in June 2002. Together, these funds have enabled the construction of new premises at the foot of Rugarama Hill. The services have expanded and now satisfy Hospital Status.
